9 Sensible Ways to Spend That Refund Check

As a family living on a single “blue collar” income, we usually receive a substantial refund during tax time each year.  Maybe it’s that way for you too.  I admit it’s easy to “blow it all” on frivolous pleasures, but this year we are really concentrating on how to best be good stewards of this yearly blessing.  After all, using this money wisely can make things a lot easier throughout the rest of the year instead of just being a temporary indulgence. While I am by no means a financial…See More

January Book Give-Away

The Hope of Refuge

by Cindy Woodsmall

Raised in foster care and now a widowed single parent, New Yorker Cara Moore struggles against poverty, fear, and a relentless stalker. When a trail of memories leads Cara and her daughter, Lori, away from the city toward an Amish community, she follows every lead, eager for answers to mysteries from her past and a fresh start. She quickly discovers that Dry Lake, Pennsylvania, is no place for an outsider.

But one Amish man, Ephraim Mast, dares to fulfill the command he believes that he received from God – “Be me to her” – despite how it threatens his way of life. Ephraim’s sister Deborah is fearful of the strange Englischer woman causing turmoil for her family, but keeps focused on the marriage and home she longs to begin with Mahlon Stolzfus. Her dreams are threatened when Mahlon begins behaving oddly, withdrawing, and causing concern for Deborah and Mahlon’s mother, Ada.

Will the run-down house that Ada envisions transforming unite them toward a common purpose – or push Mahlon away forever? As Ephraim is torn between trying to do what he believes is right and the requirements of his community, he risks losing everything, including a developing friendship with the guarded single mother. And he knows that long-held secrets about her family history ripple beneath the surface of Dry Lake – secrets with the power to tear apart the home Cara is desperately trying to find.

If you would like to enter the January Book Give-Away at Ruby for Women, please leave a comment on the Ruby for Women blog, including your email address. You will be contacted for your mailing address if you are the winner. The drawing will take place on February 1, 2011.

"Thursday Favorite Things: Writing Letters" by Nina Newton

Do you remember when we used to write cards and letters, and then drop them at the post office? Did you ever leave 13 cents in the mail box with your letter and have the mail carrier put a stamp on it for you? And the excitement of receiving a hand-written card or letter from a friend, or Grandma, or even someone you barely remember, from far, far away!

Thursday Favorite Things Blog Hop: Jars and Jars of Vintage Buttons

I have been sewing since I was a pre-teen, starting off with doll clothes and then gradually teaching myself how to sew for myself. As a young mom, I loved to sew for my children, and as they got older, I continued to sew most of the clothing that we all wore. Even jammies and play clothes! When my oldest daughter went off to college, she requested that I sew her a few dresses for…

You Need Confidence?

As a child of God, you can go boldly before God in times of trouble. The boldness you have is not one of arrogance. It is one of great confidence in God’s ability to deliver you from whatever the problem or circumstance is in your life. There is a boldness and confidence inside you because you have come to know and realize that you are not alone, that God is with you, and has given you the Holy Spirit as your helper.

In the book of Psalms, it is declared that you are as bold as a… Continue

Healing Belongs to You!

It is so awesome to know that our Lord and Savior – Jesus Christ – wants us to prosper and be in health even as our souls prosper! Father God sends forth His Word and heals us, and He has made us whole and complete in Jesus Christ. I thank God that we live, move, and have our being in Jesus!

We must understand that there are times that God performs a miracles, which happens instantaneously. For the most part however, healing is a process that we NEED go through. Often time the…
